The Melvins Albuquerque Concert reviews
they just get better with age
Dr. John and The Melvins are icons and heroes for a few generations of musicians and music lovers, especially those who know their roots. Some of the audience, obviously wasn't familiar with his history, but his piano wizardry and super-cool attitude brought smiles and swaying bodies all around. Dr. John is still the nighttripper, backed by very capable musicians, mesmerized with covers of standards, old favorites, and new tunes emphasizing the plight of post-Katrina New Orleans. The band was pitch perfect on each well arranged song, and the sound was immaculate. Dr. John's voice is unique, and his musicianship is amazing as he sings, plays organ with his right hand, and piano with his left. I'm so glad that I got to see and hear him in person, though late in his career, but still in his prime. I especially appreciate his turn at guitar, playing a more bluesy rendition of "let the good times role" per Jimi Hendrix.
The Melvins, on the other hand, had a less-than-capacity audience, more familiar with him. He started with high energy and continued to spike that energy level until I felt the hairs standing out on my arms. Like a college professor, he schooled the audience, performing a variety of tributes to fellow Chicago bluesmen, and electric blues guitarists from Muddy Waters to Jimi Hendrix. The cuts from his latest CD mixed into the set were definitely not throw-aways. His showmanship and his tight band, without a doubt, converted anyone not previously a blues lover.
